Evaluation Question 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

"In my opinion, the combination of our main product and ancillary texts' are very effective. As our video, digipak and magazine advert all work well together to look like a professional rock single release with promotional pieces."

"The video resembles other professional music videos in the rock genre, although challenging some aspects quite significantly has made the video very memorable and unique. We still keep the tones and vibes of the genre to keep the video fun and establish its genre quickly, we did this through analyse of many other popular rock music videos such as; The White Stripes - Hardest Button To Button, Sum 41 - In too Deep, and Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit."
"We also gained insight into what we would need to include to establish our video with its genre by talking to a focus group and finding people who fit in with our target demographic.
This information we gathered was valuable and in turn inspired us to find the location we used of a 'garage band' scene, and the simple costume of band t-shirts and dark casual clothes. As well as a variety of props and mise-en-scene elements such as hinting at drug and alcohol use in the video."

"The digipak does also look like a professional album cover, with high quality artwork and a theme that is continuous and consistent across all the ancillary tasks and has a brand identity with the artist."
"Our magazine advert contains elements that are not common place among all album promotions but fits well in ours and the rock genre, a website link to the official band's website and also a hand selected few tour dates for an upcoming tour that the album will no doubt be included in. This is effective in promoting another aspect of the artist than the single record but also live performances and getting audiences to actively search out the artist's website, promoting everything they are doing."

"Overall I think the digipak, magazine advert and music video all tie in well together and are clearly part of a matching promotional package, which is evident through the use of a clear picture of the band inside the digipak matching the actors used in the music video, as well as a strong use of the same font styles/colours throughout, for example the bold font of the band is used throughout and any other text is done in a rough hand written style. Although the main picture on the album cover isn't used anywhere in the music video, it does tie in with all of the other promotional content well."

"The main themes throughout the music video and to some extent the album artwork, are about growing up and maturing, which is something everyone can relate to, as well as bad habits that have to be changed to fit in to society with adults.
In terms of mise-en-scene I think our music video and promotional content effectively represent our chosen genre, through the our choice of locations, custume, and other aspects such as editing paces and techniques. The video comes across as a relatively fast paced short story that focuses around a band and there life style in stark contrast to a guy who is established and in a steady day to day routine."

  1. Add a bit about general conventions of each of these texts (editing pace, barcode, info, font sizes, etc.) and how they are essential for purposeful, professional looking products. Talk about brand identity specifically too.
